In short

Shopify development cost in India depends far more on scope (custom design, integrations, catalogue size) than on the platform itself. Your real budget has three layers: the one-time build, the Shopify plan and apps you pay monthly, and ongoing development after launch. Shopify plan prices in India start at ₹1,499 a month on yearly billing for Basic and go up to ₹22,680 for Advanced, before GST. A premium theme with sensible customisation is enough for most brands under a few crore in annual revenue; fully custom themes pay off later. Ask every agency for a line-item scope so you can compare quotes on deliverables, not on a single headline number.

Shopify development cost in India ranges from a few thousand rupees for a do-it-yourself theme setup to several lakh rupees for a custom-designed store with integrations, and beyond that for enterprise Shopify Plus builds. The platform fee is the small, predictable part; what actually moves your budget is scope: how custom the design is, how many systems need to connect, and how much product data has to be cleaned up.

This guide breaks the cost into its real components so you can build a budget, read agency quotes properly and avoid paying for things you do not need yet.

In short:

  • Budget in three layers: one-time build, recurring platform and app fees, and ongoing development.
  • Shopify plans in India start at ₹1,499 a month (Basic, yearly billing) before GST.
  • Design customisation, integrations and migration are the three biggest cost drivers.
  • Compare agency quotes line by line, not on the headline figure.

The three layers of Shopify cost

Most founders ask for "the cost of a Shopify website" as if it were one number. It is easier to plan if you split it into three layers.

  1. One-time build: design, theme development, product and content setup, app configuration, payment and shipping setup, testing and launch.
  2. Recurring platform costs: your Shopify plan, paid apps, a premium theme licence (one-time, but with future update considerations), and third-party transaction fees.
  3. Ongoing development: new landing pages, seasonal campaigns, CRO changes, bug fixes and app changes after launch.

Many brands overspend on layer one and then have nothing left for layer three, which is where most revenue gains come from once the store is live.

Shopify plan prices in India (as of September 2026)

These are the list prices on Shopify's India pricing page. GST is added on top for Indian merchants.

PlanMonthly billingYearly billing (per month)Third-party transaction fee
Basic₹1,994₹1,4992%
Grow₹7,447₹5,5991%
Advanced₹30,164₹22,6800.6%
PlusFrom ₹1,75,000 (custom terms)Custom0.2%

The transaction fee column matters in India. Shopify Payments is not available to India-based stores, so you will use a third-party gateway such as Razorpay, Cashfree or PayU, and Shopify charges its transaction fee on those payments on top of the gateway's own fee. Manual methods such as Cash on Delivery are not charged the Shopify transaction fee.

A quick worked example: a store doing ₹10 lakh a month in prepaid orders on Basic pays roughly ₹20,000 a month in Shopify transaction fees alone. On Grow, the same volume costs about ₹10,000 in fees plus a higher plan fee. Once your prepaid volume is steady, run this calculation before assuming the cheapest plan is the cheapest option.

What a build costs by project type

The ranges below are indicative figures for the Indian market, based on the kinds of scopes agencies and freelancers typically quote. They are not a rate card, and a good partner should explain exactly where your project sits and why.

Project typeWhat it usually includesIndicative one-time costTypical timeline

Paid themes in the Shopify Theme Store are currently listed at roughly $100 to $500 as a one-time purchase, so the theme itself is rarely the expensive part. The cost is the time spent adapting it.

The seven factors that drive your quote

1. Design approach

A premium theme adapted to your brand is the right choice for most early and mid-stage D2C brands. A fully custom design makes sense when your brand relies on a distinctive experience, when you have tested enough to know what your customers need, or when theme limitations are clearly costing you conversions.

2. Number of unique templates

Every distinct page type (home, collection, product, bundle page, landing page, about, store locator) needs design and build time. A store with one product template is much cheaper than one with separate templates for skincare, gifting and subscriptions.

3. Catalogue size and data quality

Uploading 50 clean products is a day's work. Uploading 3,000 SKUs with inconsistent variant names, missing images and no HSN codes can take weeks. Shopify stores HSN codes in the product's HS tariff code field, and the Shopify GST help page notes it needs at least six digits, so budget for data clean-up if your spreadsheets are messy.

4. Integrations

Connecting Shopify to a courier aggregator, WhatsApp tool or Klaviyo is usually app configuration. Connecting it to an ERP, Tally, a custom warehouse system or a B2B pricing engine usually needs custom development and testing, which is where budgets grow fastest.

5. Checkout requirements

On non-Plus plans, checkout customisation is limited to Shopify's settings, branding options and apps. Checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps are available only on Shopify Plus. If your plan depends on heavy checkout changes, that changes both the plan and the build cost.

6. Migration

Moving from WooCommerce, Magento or a custom site adds data export, mapping, URL redirects and SEO checks. Skipping redirects to save money is one of the most expensive mistakes in ecommerce.

7. Who does the work

Freelancers are cheaper per hour but you manage the project. Agencies cost more but include project management, design, QA and accountability. In-house developers make sense once you have a steady weekly backlog of work.

Recurring costs founders forget

Use this checklist when you build your monthly budget:

  • Apps: reviews, subscriptions, bundles, search, loyalty and WhatsApp tools each carry a monthly fee. Five to ten paid apps is common, and some charge by order volume.
  • Email and SMS: Klaviyo and similar tools price by contacts, so costs grow with your list.
  • Gateway fees: Indian gateways typically charge around 2% per transaction plus GST on the fee, on top of any Shopify transaction fee.
  • COD costs: courier COD charges and return-to-origin losses are real costs even though they do not appear on your Shopify bill.
  • Maintenance: theme updates, app conflicts and small fixes. Budget a monthly retainer or a pool of hours.

A worked budget example

Consider a hypothetical skincare brand launching with 40 products, a premium theme and a small app stack, billed yearly on Grow.

ItemCost
Premium theme build (agency)₹1.5 lakh one-time
Theme licenceAbout $350 one-time
Grow plan (yearly billing)₹5,599 a month plus GST
Apps (reviews, WhatsApp, bundles, search)₹8,000 to ₹15,000 a month, depending on volume
Ongoing development and CRO₹25,000 to ₹60,000 a month

In year one, this brand's build is actually a smaller share of the total than its recurring costs. That is normal, and it is why choosing apps carefully and having a plan for post-launch work matters as much as the launch quote.

How to compare Shopify quotes properly

When you receive two quotes that differ by ₹2 lakh, the difference is almost always in scope, not greed. Ask each agency for:

  1. A list of every page template they will design and build.
  2. The number of products and collections included in the setup.
  3. Which apps they will configure and whether licences are included.
  4. What tracking they will set up (GA4, Meta, Google Ads) and how they will test it.
  5. How many design revision rounds are included.
  6. Post-launch support: how many days, and what counts as a bug versus a new request.
  7. Who owns the theme code, Figma files and accounts at the end.

If a quote is dramatically cheaper, check which of these items is missing. For a broader view of planning a build, our ecommerce website development guide walks through the full process.

Where to save and where not to

Safe places to save: start on a premium theme rather than a custom one, launch with fewer templates, delay nice-to-have apps, and write your own product copy if you know your customer well.

Places not to save: tracking setup, URL redirects during migration, mobile speed, checkout and payment testing, and product photography. Cutting these costs you more in lost sales than you save in development.

Getting an accurate number for your store

The quickest way to a reliable figure is a short discovery call with your catalogue size, integrations and a few reference sites ready. At The Night Marketer, a Shopify Select partner based in New Delhi, we scope builds line by line so you can see exactly what you are paying for and what can wait until phase two. Frequently asked questions

Use a free Shopify theme, the Basic plan and a small set of free or low-cost apps, and set it up yourself or with a freelancer. You can be live for the cost of the plan plus a few days of work. The trade-off is limited design distinctiveness and no strategic input on conversion, tracking or retention.

Upfront, WooCommerce can look cheaper because the software is free. Once you add hosting, security, plugin licences, updates and developer time for maintenance, the gap usually narrows or reverses. Shopify bundles hosting, security and checkout, so you trade some flexibility for lower maintenance effort. Compare total cost over two to three years, not just launch cost.

Yes. Shopify's India pricing page shows plan fees before tax, and GST at the applicable rate is added to your bill as an Indian merchant. If your business is GST registered, speak to your CA about claiming input tax credit on the subscription and on agency invoices, since this changes your effective cost.

A theme-based store with clean content can take two to four weeks. A premium theme with custom sections and integrations usually takes six to ten weeks. Fully custom designs, migrations with large catalogues or ERP integrations can run three months or more. Delays almost always come from content, product data and approvals rather than from development.

Fixed price works when the scope is clear and written down, such as a new build or a migration. Hourly or a monthly retainer suits ongoing improvements, CRO testing and small feature requests. Whatever model you choose, insist on a written scope, a change request process and a clear list of what is excluded.
