In short
- India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 with no daylight saving, so overlap with the UK is comfortable and overlap with the US East Coast is a short morning or evening window.
- The biggest risks when you hire Shopify developers in India are unclear scope and weak QA, not skill; both are solved with process.
- Your contract should cover IP assignment, confidentiality, data protection, payment milestones and account ownership.
- Use Shopify collaborator accounts, a staging theme and version control so you never hand over your store password or lose track of changes.
- Start with a small, well-defined paid project to test communication and quality before committing to a retainer.
Hiring Shopify developers in India from the US or UK works well when you plan for three things: a fixed daily overlap window, a contract that gives you full ownership of the work, and a QA process that catches problems before they reach your live store. India has a deep pool of experienced Shopify talent; most failed engagements come from vague scope and weak review, not lack of skill.
This guide covers time zones, contracts, pricing models and QA, with a checklist you can use before you sign.
Time zones: how much overlap to expect
India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 and India does not observe daylight saving, according to timeanddate.com. The gap to your team therefore changes when UK or US clocks change.
| Your location | India is ahead by (summer time) | India is ahead by (winter time) | Typical overlap |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK | 4.5 hours | 5.5 hours | UK morning to early afternoon |
| US East Coast | 9.5 hours | 10.5 hours | Early US morning (Indian evening) |
| US West Coast | 12.5 hours | 13.5 hours | Very limited; rely on async |
Making the gap work for you
- Fix a daily overlap slot. Even 60 to 90 minutes of shared time each day is enough for stand-ups, reviews and decisions.
- Use the "overnight" advantage. US teams can review work in the morning, leave feedback by lunch and find changes done the next morning.
- Write things down. Short Loom videos, annotated screenshots and tickets beat long calls across time zones.
- Agree an emergency route. For a checkout or payment issue during your peak hours, decide in advance who is on call and how to reach them.
Engagement models and cost
Rates vary widely by experience, company size and scope, so treat any figure you see online with caution. What matters more is choosing the right model.
| Model | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-price project | New builds, migrations, redesigns with clear scope | Scope creep; insist on a written change process |
| Monthly retainer (pool of hours) | Ongoing CRO, landing pages, fixes | Unused hours; agree rollover rules |
| Dedicated developer | A steady weekly backlog | You still need design, QA and code review |
| Hourly | Small, unpredictable tasks | Hard to forecast; set a monthly cap |
A worked example of how to compare: suppose Agency A quotes a lower hourly rate for a developer only, while Agency B quotes more per hour but includes a project manager, designer review and QA. If you would otherwise spend five hours a week managing Agency A's work yourself, Agency B may be cheaper once your time is counted. Always compare total cost of the outcome, not the rate card.
Contracts: what to include
Use a written agreement that covers at least the following. Have your lawyer review it for your jurisdiction.
- Scope of work: deliverables, exclusions, acceptance criteria and timelines.
- IP assignment: all code, designs and content created for you are assigned to your company on payment. Clarify that third-party themes and apps remain under their own licences.
- Confidentiality: covering customer data, sales figures and roadmap.
- Data protection: if developers can access customer data, include data processing terms appropriate to your obligations, such as UK GDPR for UK brands.
- Payment milestones and currency: tie payments to delivered milestones and agree the invoicing currency (USD or GBP) and method.
- Change requests: how extra work is estimated and approved.
- Warranty and support: a period after launch during which bugs are fixed at no cost.
- Termination and handover: notice period, return of access and delivery of all files and repositories.
A note on Indian GST
Overseas clients often ask whether they will be charged Indian GST. Under Section 16 of the IGST Act, export of services is a zero-rated supply, and exporters can supply under a Letter of Undertaking without paying integrated tax, provided the conditions for export of services are met. As of September 2026, this is how many Indian agencies invoice foreign clients, but the supplier is responsible for its own compliance. Ask how they will invoice, and check your own tax position with your accountant.
Access and security
Never share your store owner login. Shopify's collaborator accounts are built for this:
- You set a collaborator request code and share it only with the partner you are hiring.
- They request access, and you approve it with only the permissions they need, such as themes and apps, without access to payments or ownership settings.
- Collaborators do not count towards your store's staff limit, and you can remove them at any time.
Keep ownership of everything else as well: domain, analytics, ad accounts, email platform and code repositories should all sit under your company, with the agency added as a user.
QA: the process that makes offshore work reliable
Most offshore problems show up as "it worked on their screen". A simple QA process prevents that.
Workflow
- Work on a duplicate theme, never directly on the live theme.
- Use version control. Connect the theme to a Git repository so every change is tracked and reversible.
- Share preview links for every piece of work, with a short change log.
- Review on real devices at your end, especially mid-range Android and iPhone.
- Publish in your daytime so your team can watch orders and roll back if needed.
Pre-release checklist
- Home, collection, product, cart and checkout work on mobile and desktop.
- Add to cart, discount codes and checkout complete successfully.
- Purchase tracking fires once per order in GA4 and ad platforms.
- Page speed is no worse than before the change.
- No console errors and no broken links on changed pages.
- Content and pricing match your market and currency.
Custom functionality
If your team builds custom apps, including custom Shopify Functions for discounts or shipping logic, note that Shopify's documentation says only Shopify Plus stores can use custom apps containing Functions. Confirm your plan before scoping that work.
How to shortlist Indian Shopify partners
- Browse Shopify's Partner Directory, which lets you filter by location, including India, and by service.
- Ask for live stores for clients in your country or market, and test them on your phone.
- Check written English in their proposal; it predicts day-to-day communication.
- Ask who will attend your overlap calls and who will actually write the code.
- Request one or two client references from the US or UK.
A low-risk way to start
Begin with a paid, well-defined project of one to three weeks: a landing page, a speed fix or a product page redesign. Judge the team on communication, quality, QA and whether they met the deadline. If it goes well, move to a retainer with a monthly review.

Working with a Delhi-based Shopify team
The Night Marketer is a Shopify Select partner in New Delhi. For international clients we agree fixed overlap hours up front, work through collaborator access only and share a QA checklist with every release. If you are planning to hire Shopify developers in India, talk to our Shopify development team about a small first project.
Frequently asked questions
India does not use daylight saving, so overlap shifts with UK and US clocks. UK teams typically get three to four hours of shared office time. US East Coast teams usually get a short window in their morning, which is evening in India. Some Indian agencies schedule staff on a later shift to widen US overlap.
Export of services is treated as a zero-rated supply under Section 16 of India's IGST Act, and many exporters supply under a Letter of Undertaking without charging IGST, if the conditions for export of services are met. The Indian supplier handles this; confirm with them how they will invoice, and check your own local tax position with your accountant.
Use Shopify collaborator accounts. The partner requests access using a collaborator request code you share, and you approve the request with only the permissions they need. Collaborators do not count towards your staff limit, and you can remove access at any time. Never share your owner login or payment details.
Freelancers usually cost less per hour, but you take on project management, QA and the risk of a single person being unavailable. Agencies cost more per hour but include design, QA, project management and backup. For a one-off build or ongoing retainer where reliability matters, an agency is often cheaper overall once you count your own time.
Review every change on a preview or staging theme, not the live store. Check key templates on real mobile devices, run through add to cart and checkout, confirm tracking still fires, and compare page speed before and after. Ask for a short change log with each delivery so you know exactly what was modified.
