In short
- As of September 2026, Shopify Advanced costs ₹22,680 a month on yearly billing in India, while Shopify Plus starts from ₹1,75,000 a month, both before GST.
- The lower Plus transaction fee on third-party gateways (0.2% versus 0.6%) only covers the price gap at very high prepaid volumes.
- The real reasons to move to Plus are capabilities: checkout UI extensions on every step, custom Functions apps, advanced B2B, expansion stores and unlimited staff.
- Most Indian D2C brands under several crore a month in online revenue are well served by Advanced, especially if their checkout is handled by a third-party checkout app.
- Decide by listing the specific Plus features you would use in the next 12 months and what each is worth in revenue or saved cost.
Most Indian D2C brands need Shopify Advanced, not Plus. Plus starts at roughly seven to eight times the price of Advanced in India, and its lower transaction fee only closes that gap at very high prepaid volumes. You should move to Plus when you need specific capabilities, such as checkout extensions on every step, custom Shopify Functions, advanced B2B or multiple expansion stores, not simply because revenue has grown.
This guide compares the two plans on cost, features and fit, and gives you a simple method to decide.
Price comparison in India (as of September 2026)
These figures come from Shopify's India pricing page. GST is charged on top for Indian merchants.
| Advanced | Plus | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly billing | ₹30,164 a month | From ₹1,75,000 a month |
| Yearly billing | ₹22,680 a month | Custom terms |
| Third-party payment transaction fee | 0.6% | 0.2% |
| Staff accounts | 15 | Unlimited |
Treat the Plus figure as a starting point. Ask Shopify for a written quote showing term length and any revenue-linked fees, because that is the number you should model.
Why transaction fees matter more in India
Shopify Payments is not available to India-based stores according to Shopify's supported countries list. That means your prepaid orders go through a third-party gateway such as Razorpay, Cashfree or PayU, and Shopify charges its transaction fee on those payments on top of the gateway's fee. Manual payment methods such as COD are not charged the Shopify transaction fee, per Shopify's manual payments documentation.
Worked break-even example
Using list prices on yearly billing, the monthly plan gap is about ₹1,75,000 minus ₹22,680, or ₹1,52,320. The fee difference is 0.4 percentage points (0.6% minus 0.2%).
- Break-even prepaid gateway volume = ₹1,52,320 ÷ 0.004 = about ₹3.8 crore a month.
- A brand doing ₹1.5 crore a month, with 60% prepaid (₹90 lakh through gateways), saves about ₹36,000 a month in fees on Plus, far below the plan gap.
So unless you process several crore a month in prepaid orders, the fee alone will not justify Plus. The decision comes down to features.

When Plus is worth it
1. You need to change checkout itself
If you want custom fields, delivery date pickers, upsells or trust content on the information, shipping or payment steps using Shopify's native checkout, you need Plus. This is the most common genuine reason to upgrade.
2. Your discount or shipping logic is unique
Plus lets you run custom apps with your own Functions. If your pricing depends on metafields, customer tags, ERP data or unusual bundle rules that no public app handles well, this matters.
3. You run serious B2B alongside D2C
Brands selling to retailers, salons, clinics or distributors from the same store benefit from company accounts, catalogues and payment terms on Plus.
4. You need several storefronts
Separate stores for India and international, a wholesale store, or a second brand can use Plus expansion stores rather than paying for multiple full plans.
5. Your team and operations have outgrown 15 staff accounts
Large customer service, warehouse and marketing teams need unlimited staff accounts and more locations.
When to stay on Advanced
- You use a third-party checkout. Many Indian brands run one-click or COD-focused checkout apps that replace Shopify's checkout experience. If your checkout lives there, Plus checkout extensibility adds little.
- Public apps cover your discount and bundle logic. Function-based apps work on any plan.
- Your bottleneck is traffic or conversion, not platform. ₹1.5 lakh a month is a meaningful CRO, retention or content budget.
- You sell mainly D2C in one market. Markets, custom reports and carrier-calculated shipping on Advanced handle most needs.
Costs of Plus beyond the plan fee
The subscription is only part of the bill. Before you sign, budget for the work that turns Plus features into results:
- Checkout extension development: designing, building and testing extensions for the information, shipping and payment steps.
- Custom Functions: development plus ongoing maintenance as Function APIs are versioned.
- B2B setup: company records, catalogues, price lists and staff training.
- Expansion stores: each extra store needs its own theme work, content, apps and tracking.
- Apps priced for Plus: some apps charge more on Plus stores or have enterprise tiers.
A useful rule: if you cannot name who will build and own these pieces, you will pay for Plus without using it. Development in the first months on Plus can be a significant cost alongside the subscription itself, so plan both budgets together and phase the work so the highest-value feature ships first.
Two myths about Shopify Plus
"Plus converts better"
Plus does not automatically lift conversion. The checkout is the same Shopify checkout; Plus lets you customise it further. Gains come from what you build with that access.
"Plus is faster"
Store speed depends mainly on your theme, apps and images, which are the same on either plan. Fixing Core Web Vitals is usually a better investment than a plan upgrade.
A five-question decision test
- Which specific Plus features would we use in the next 12 months? List them by name.
- What is each one worth: extra revenue from checkout changes, saved app fees, saved staff time or new B2B revenue?
- What is the full annual Plus cost, including GST, compared with Advanced?
- Do we have the development capacity to build and maintain checkout extensions and Functions?
- Is our current conversion rate held back by the platform, or by site experience and offers?
If the value in question two clearly exceeds the cost in question three, and you can say yes to question four, upgrade. If not, invest the difference in the store you already have. Our guide to proven Shopify CRO tactics is a good starting point for that budget.
Planning the move if you do upgrade
Upgrading plans does not rebuild your store, but getting value from Plus takes planning:
- Map checkout changes you want and design them as extensions before the switch.
- Replace app-based logic with custom Functions only where it genuinely helps.
- Set up B2B companies, catalogues and price lists, and test customer logins.
- Review staff permissions now that you can add more accounts.

Frequently asked questions
Shopify's India pricing page lists Plus as starting from ₹1,75,000 a month, with custom terms, as of September 2026. GST is added for Indian merchants. Actual pricing depends on your agreement with Shopify, so request a formal quote that shows the term length, any revenue-based fees and what is included before comparing it with Advanced.
Partly. All plans get checkout branding settings, apps and blocks on the Thank you and Order status pages. Checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps are available only on Shopify Plus. Many Indian brands on Advanced use a third-party checkout app instead, which changes what native customisation you actually need.
Only at high volume. The difference is 0.4 percentage points on payments through third-party gateways. With the list price gap between the plans, you would need prepaid gateway volume of roughly ₹3.8 crore a month for the fee saving alone to cover the difference. COD orders do not carry the Shopify transaction fee, so they do not count.
Moving plans is possible, but Plus-only features such as custom Function apps, checkout extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps and expansion stores stop working or need replacing. Plus agreements also often have a minimum term. Check your contract and list every Plus dependency before planning a downgrade.
Yes. Shopify describes Advanced as letting you tailor the buying experience for each market, and it includes carrier-calculated shipping and custom reports. Plus adds up to nine expansion stores, which some brands use for separate regional storefronts or a wholesale store. For most brands starting international sales, Markets on Advanced is enough.
