Did Shopify's August 2026 Checkout Upgrade Break Your Tracking? A 20-Minute Fix Checklist

If purchases vanished from GA4 or Meta after 26 August, here is how to find the gap and fix it with customer events

In short

Non-Plus Shopify stores had until 26 August 2026 to upgrade their Thank you and Order status pages, and legacy customisations on those pages do not carry over. Tracking code in the old Additional scripts box or in script tags on those pages is the most common cause of missing purchase events. The fix is to move each tag to an app pixel (preferred) or a custom pixel under Settings, Customer events. Test every platform with a real test order and compare purchase counts against Shopify orders for a week. Remove duplicate tags once the new setup is confirmed, or you will inflate conversions and confuse ad algorithms.

Quite possibly, yes. According to Shopify's Help Center, 26 August 2026 was the deadline for stores on non-Plus plans to upgrade their Thank you and Order status pages, and when those pages are upgraded, existing customisations on them are replaced. If your purchase tracking lived in the old Additional scripts box or was injected by an older app, it may have stopped firing, even though orders kept coming in.

The good news is that the fix is usually quick. Work through the checklist below and you can find and close most gaps in about 20 minutes, then monitor for a week.

In short:

  • Compare Shopify orders with purchases in GA4, Meta and Google Ads to confirm the gap.
  • Find where your old purchase tags lived: Additional scripts, script tags or theme code.
  • Move each one to an app pixel or a custom pixel under Settings, Customer events.
  • Test with a real order, then remove duplicates.

What changed in August 2026

Shopify has been moving checkout to what it calls checkout extensibility: sandboxed checkout UI extensions, Shopify Functions and web pixels instead of checkout.liquid, Additional scripts and script tags. Shopify Plus stores went through this earlier. For everyone on Basic, Grow and Advanced, the last piece was the post-purchase pages.

Two points from Shopify's upgrade guide matter for tracking:

  • Since 28 August 2025, the Additional scripts section in checkout settings has been view-only, so you could not edit those scripts anyway.
  • When the Thank you and Order status pages are upgraded, "existing customizations on those pages are replaced." Shopify's guidance is to use app pixels and custom pixels to keep tracking customer events.

In practice, anything that fired a purchase conversion on the thank you page through the old method is the prime suspect.

The symptoms to look for

  • Meta Ads Manager shows far fewer purchases than Shopify orders from late August onwards.
  • GA4 purchase events or revenue dropped sharply while sessions stayed steady.
  • Google Ads conversions fell and Smart Bidding campaigns started under-spending or behaving erratically.
  • Affiliate or influencer platforms stopped recording sales.
  • Post-purchase survey, upsell or referral widgets disappeared from the thank you page.
  • The opposite problem: reported purchases suddenly doubled because you added a new pixel without removing an old tag.

The 20-minute fix checklist

Minutes 0 to 5: confirm the gap

  1. In Shopify, open Analytics and note online store orders for the last 14 days.
  2. In GA4, open the purchase event count for the same dates.
  3. In Meta Events Manager and Google Ads, note reported purchases for the same dates.
  4. Write the four numbers side by side. Look for the date where the lines diverge.

A small gap is normal because of consent choices, ad blockers and attribution rules. A sudden break starting around your upgrade date is what you are hunting for.

Minutes 5 to 10: find where the old tags lived

  1. Go to Settings, Checkout and look at the Additional scripts box. It is read-only now, but you can still see what was there. Copy the contents into a document.
  2. List every tag you find: Meta Pixel, Google Ads conversion, GA4 gtag, affiliate scripts, survey tools, and anything unfamiliar.
  3. Check your installed apps for older tracking or upsell apps that may have relied on script tags.
  4. Search your theme code for hardcoded tracking snippets. Theme tags on storefront pages still run, but they cannot see checkout or thank you page events.

Minutes 10 to 15: reconnect through Customer events

Open Settings, Customer events. This is where Shopify now manages tracking. You will see two types of pixel.

Pixel typeWhat it isWhen to use it
App pixelInstalled and maintained by an app, such as the Google and YouTube or Facebook and Instagram channelsAlways first choice when an official app exists
Custom pixelJavaScript you add yourself, running in a sandbox and subscribing to Shopify's standard eventsTools with no Shopify app, such as some affiliate networks

For each tag on your list:

  1. Meta: install or reconnect the Facebook and Instagram app, connect your pixel and enable the maximum data sharing option you are comfortable with. Check that it appears as an app pixel with the status connected.
  2. Google Analytics 4 and Google Ads: use the Google and YouTube app to connect your GA4 property and Google Ads account, and confirm conversion actions are set up.
  3. Tools without an app: add a custom pixel. It subscribes to standard events such as checkout_completed, which Shopify fires once per checkout, typically on the Thank you page. Pass order ID, value and currency from the event data to the tool.
  4. GTM users: follow Shopify's Google Tag Manager custom pixel tutorial. Expect to rebuild some triggers around Shopify's event names rather than page URLs.

Note Shopify's own warning in its custom pixels documentation: custom pixels are your responsibility for compliance, consent and troubleshooting, and some functions do not work in the sandbox. Keep custom pixels to the minimum you need.

Minutes 15 to 20: test with a real order

  1. For custom pixels, use the Test option in Settings, Customer events, as described in Shopify's testing guide.
  2. Install the Shopify Pixel Helper browser extension and walk through the funnel: view a product, add to cart, start checkout, enter shipping, and complete the order.
  3. Place a real low-value order with a discount code or a prepaid method you can refund, and COD if you offer it.
  4. Confirm the purchase appears in Meta Events Manager's test events, GA4 DebugView or real-time report, and your other tools.
  5. Check the order value and currency are correct, with INR rather than a default currency.

Fix the duplicates you just created

The most common mistake after a fix is double counting. If you added the Meta app pixel and a custom pixel for Meta, or GA4 through both the Google app and GTM, every purchase is sent twice. Ad platforms then optimise towards inflated numbers, and your ROAS looks better than reality.

  • Keep one source of truth per platform.
  • Remove leftover snippets in theme code that duplicate an app pixel on storefront pages.
  • Where platforms support it, pass the order ID as an event or transaction ID so duplicates can be deduplicated.

Do not forget the non-tracking customisations

The same upgrade affects anything else that ran on those pages. Replace thank you page upsells, post-purchase surveys, referral prompts and delivery messaging with apps that support blocks on the new pages. Checkout UI extensions for the Thank you and Order status pages are not limited to Plus, although extensions for the information, shipping and payment steps remain Plus-only.

For Indian stores, pay extra attention to COD. If you used a thank you page script to trigger COD confirmation messages on WhatsApp, check that your WhatsApp or RTO tool now listens to Shopify's order events rather than a page script.

A one-week monitoring routine

DayCheck
Day 1Test order recorded in every platform with correct value
Days 2 to 3Daily purchase counts in GA4 and Meta within a sensible range of Shopify orders
Days 4 to 5Google Ads conversions flowing and bidding stable; affiliate sales recorded
Day 7Week-on-week comparison; document the final setup for your team

If your numbers never matched well even before the upgrade, the problem runs deeper than one deadline. Our guide on why Shopify tracking lies to you covers attribution gaps and how to read them.

When to get help

If you have several ad platforms, affiliates and a custom GTM setup, or your paid campaigns are already under-delivering because of missing conversions, it is worth having someone audit the full event flow rather than patching tag by tag. The Night Marketer's conversion rate optimisation team can audit your checkout, rebuild tracking on customer events and confirm your purchase data is trustworthy before you scale spend into the festive season.

Frequently asked questions

If your purchase tag lived in the Additional scripts box or was injected into the Thank you page by an older app, it stopped running once the page was upgraded. Orders still happened; the platforms just stopped hearing about them. Reconnect tracking through the official sales channel apps or a custom pixel and your reported conversions should recover.

Use an app pixel whenever the platform offers an official Shopify app, such as Google and YouTube or Facebook and Instagram. App pixels are maintained by the platform and handle consent. Use a custom pixel only for tools without an app, such as some affiliate networks or niche analytics tools, and document exactly what each one does.

Yes, but not the old way on checkout pages. Shopify's Help Center has a tutorial for loading Google Tag Manager inside a custom pixel, where it runs in a sandbox and listens to Shopify's standard customer events. Some GTM features that rely on reading the page directly will not work in that sandbox, so test carefully.

Yes, it comes from the same change. Widgets that were injected with scripts need to be replaced by apps that support checkout UI extensions or blocks on the Thank you and Order status pages. Check the app's listing for support for the new pages, or switch to an alternative that offers it.

Watch daily for at least seven days. Compare Shopify's order count with purchases reported in GA4, Meta and Google Ads. A gap of a few per cent is normal because of consent, ad blockers and attribution windows. A gap of 30 per cent or more, or reported purchases higher than real orders, points to a missing or duplicated tag.
