How to sequence email, WhatsApp and SMS cart reminders for Indian shoppers without over-messaging or breaking rules

In short

  • Use email as the backbone of abandoned cart recovery, WhatsApp for one fast high-intent nudge, and SMS only where you have DLT-registered templates and a clear reason.
  • Meta treats WhatsApp cart reminders as marketing templates, priced at ₹0.8631 per delivered message to Indian numbers on its rate card effective 1 July 2026.
  • TRAI rules require promotional SMS to carry a -P header suffix and an opt-out mechanism in the same message, and mixed promotional content makes a message promotional.
  • Orchestrate channels so one shopper gets one nudge at a time, and stop every channel the moment an order is placed.
  • Flows triggered on Added to Cart catch shoppers who never reach checkout, which a Started Checkout flow alone misses.

The most effective abandoned cart recovery uses each channel for what it does best: email as the backbone of the sequence, WhatsApp for one fast, high-intent nudge, and SMS only where you have compliant templates and a reason to use it. The key is orchestration. Each shopper should get one well-timed message at a time, and every channel should stop the moment they order.

In India this matters more than usual, because many shoppers can be reached on all three channels and it is easy to overwhelm them.

In short

  • Build email first: it is cheapest, richest and works for every contactable shopper.
  • Add WhatsApp for opted-in shoppers, as one message rather than a sequence.
  • Treat SMS cart reminders as promotional under TRAI rules, with DLT templates and opt-out.
  • Trigger on Added to Cart as well as Started Checkout to catch more shoppers.

Why carts get abandoned in India

Recovery messages work best when they answer the reason someone left. For Indian D2C stores, common reasons include unexpected shipping charges, uncertainty about delivery time, COD not being available for a pincode, payment failures on UPI or cards, and simple comparison shopping. A reminder that says "you forgot something" does less than one that says "free delivery in 3 to 5 days, COD available, easy returns".

Before you build messages, fix what you can on the store itself. Our guide to mobile checkout optimisation covers the most common checkout friction.

Two triggers, not one

Klaviyo's standard abandoned cart flow is triggered by Started Checkout, according to its Shopify data reference. That only catches shoppers who reached checkout and entered contact details. With onsite tracking enabled, Klaviyo can also record Added to Cart for known visitors, as its onsite tracking guide explains. Use both:

  • Checkout abandonment: highest intent, most aggressive sequence.
  • Cart abandonment: known subscriber added to cart but never started checkout. Lighter sequence, filtered so anyone who then starts checkout moves to the other flow.

If you run Klaviyo, our Klaviyo email marketing page explains how we structure these flows for Shopify stores.

Channel by channel

Email: the backbone

Email reaches every shopper who gave an address, costs little per send and can carry product images, reviews, delivery details and FAQs. On Shopify Email, abandoned checkout automations are free and do not count towards the monthly allowance.

A good default is three emails: the first within one to two hours with the exact cart contents, the second after about 24 hours with reviews and answers to common objections, and the third around 48 to 72 hours with urgency (low stock, if true) or an incentive for high-value carts.

WhatsApp: the fast nudge

WhatsApp messages tend to be seen quickly, which makes one timely reminder powerful. But Meta's template guidelines class cart reminders as marketing, and Meta's INR rate card effective 1 July 2026 prices a marketing message to an Indian number at ₹0.8631, before GST and provider fees (pricing overview). You also need opt-in: the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy only allows messages to people who have opted in to hear from you.

Use one message, with a product image, the cart total and a direct checkout link. Quick-reply buttons like "Need help?" can route to your support team, and customer replies open a free 24-hour service window.

SMS: use with care

Klaviyo SMS does not currently send to India, so Indian brands use a local SMS provider. Under TRAI's February 2025 amendment to the commercial communication regulations:

  • Headers must carry a suffix showing the message type: -P for promotional, -S for service, -T for transactional.
  • A promotional message must give the recipient an opt-out mechanism in the same message.
  • If promotional content is mixed into a transactional or service message, the whole message is treated as promotional.
  • Messages containing URLs, APKs or callback numbers go through extra scrutiny, and only whitelisted links submitted by the sender are allowed.

A cart reminder encouraging a purchase will usually be treated as promotional. That means DLT-registered templates, whitelisted links and delivery limited by customer preferences unless you hold explicit digital consent. For many D2C brands, WhatsApp does the same job with richer content, so SMS becomes a fallback rather than a core channel.

What to put in each message

Email content checklist

  • A subject line that names the product or the benefit, not just "You forgot something".
  • The exact items, with images, variant (size, colour) and price, pulled dynamically from the cart.
  • One clear button that restores the cart, tested on mobile.
  • Delivery estimate, COD availability, return policy and a note that prices include GST, if they do.
  • Two or three short reviews for the product in the cart, not generic brand praise.
  • A reply-to address that a real person reads. Some shoppers will reply with a question.

WhatsApp content checklist

  • Under 60 words. People read WhatsApp in a glance.
  • A product image header and the cart total.
  • A single call-to-action button linking to checkout.
  • A quick-reply button for help, routed to your support inbox.
  • A clear way to stop receiving marketing messages.

Testing what works

Change one thing at a time and give each test enough volume to mean something. Good first tests are send timing (one hour versus four hours for the first email), incentive versus no incentive on the final email, and whether adding WhatsApp for opted-in shoppers raises total recovered orders or simply shifts them from email. Judge tests on recovered revenue per abandoned checkout, not on opens or clicks.

A sample orchestrated sequence

Timing after abandonmentChannelWho receives itMessage focus
About 30 to 60 minutesWhatsAppOpted-in shoppers onlyCart image, total, checkout link, help button
2 to 4 hoursEmail 1Everyone contactable who has not orderedExact cart, delivery estimate, COD and returns
24 hoursEmail 2Still not orderedReviews, FAQs, size or usage help
48 to 72 hoursEmail 3Still not ordered, cart above a set valueFinal reminder, optional incentive

Every step should check "placed order since starting" before sending. If a shopper replies on WhatsApp with a question, pause the email steps until the conversation is resolved.

What it costs: a worked example

Take a hypothetical store with 2,000 contactable abandoned checkouts a month, an average cart of ₹1,400, and 40% of shoppers opted in to WhatsApp.

  • WhatsApp: 800 messages at ₹0.8631 is about ₹690 in Meta charges, before GST and provider fees.
  • Email: up to 6,000 sends. On Shopify Email, abandoned checkout sends are free. On Klaviyo or Omnisend, they are part of your plan.

If the combined sequence recovered 5% of those 2,000 checkouts, that would be 100 orders worth ₹1,40,000. These figures are illustrative. What matters is tracking your own recovered orders against channel costs each month.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Triple-hitting: WhatsApp, SMS and email all firing within the same hour.
  • No purchase check: reminding someone who has already bought.
  • Discount on the first touch: it trains shoppers to abandon on purpose.
  • Mixing promotions into utility messages: on WhatsApp it changes the price category, and on SMS it changes the regulatory category.
  • Unlimited re-entry: cap flow entry so habitual browsers are not messaged every few days.

Building a recovery system that respects customers

Good abandoned cart recovery feels like helpful service, not pursuit. Start with email, add a single WhatsApp nudge for opted-in shoppers, keep SMS compliant or skip it, and measure recovered orders against cost every month. If you want the whole system built and connected to Shopify and Klaviyo, see our email and messaging automation services.

Frequently asked questions

It varies widely by price point, traffic quality and how many abandoners you can contact at all, so be wary of universal benchmarks. Track your own recovered orders divided by contactable abandoned checkouts, month by month. Improve it by sending faster, answering objections such as delivery and returns, and adding a second channel for high-value carts.

Usually not. The first reminder should simply bring the shopper back, with the product, price and a one-tap link. Many abandon for reasons a discount will not fix, such as comparing options or payment failures. If you use an incentive, save it for the final message, limit it to first-time buyers or larger carts, and test against a no-discount version.

Under TRAI's amended regulations, a transactional message is sent in response to a customer-initiated transaction within thirty minutes, such as an OTP, and any promotional content makes a message promotional. A cart reminder encouraging purchase will usually be treated as promotional, so it needs a promotional template, the -P header and an opt-out option. Confirm with your SMS provider.

No. WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy only lets you message people who gave you their number and opted in to receive messages from you. Collect a specific WhatsApp opt-in at checkout or through a signup form, and send cart reminders only to those customers. Respect every opt-out request immediately.

Across all channels, three to four touches over three days is a sensible ceiling for most D2C brands: for example, a WhatsApp message and two or three emails. More than that tends to raise unsubscribes and blocks. Suppress all reminders as soon as the customer orders, and cap how often one person can enter the flow.
