In short

  • Shopify Email includes 10,000 free emails a month, then charges $1 per 1,000, and abandoned checkout automations never count towards the limit.
  • Klaviyo offers the deepest segmentation, flows and predictive analytics, with paid plans priced by active profiles above a free tier of 250 profiles and 500 emails a month.
  • Omnisend's Standard plan starts at $16 a month and Pro at $59 a month according to its help centre, with billable contacts including non-subscribers.
  • None of the three gives Indian brands native SMS as a simple default, so plan WhatsApp alongside whichever email tool you choose.
  • Start on Shopify Email if you are pre-revenue or tiny, and move to Klaviyo once flows and segmentation start driving a meaningful share of revenue.

For most Indian D2C brands, the answer depends on stage. Shopify Email is the cheapest and simplest place to start. Omnisend is a solid middle ground with predictable plan pricing. Klaviyo is the best fit once email and retention drive a meaningful share of revenue and you need deep segmentation and flows.

All three handle email well. The differences are in data depth, automation logic, pricing model and how they fit alongside WhatsApp, which matters more in India than almost anywhere else.

In short

  • Shopify Email: 10,000 free emails a month, then usage pricing. Best for new and small stores.
  • Omnisend: plan-based pricing, good automation templates, SMS on Pro. Good for growing stores on a budget.
  • Klaviyo: deepest data and flows, priced by active profiles. Best for scaling brands.
  • Whichever you pick, plan WhatsApp alongside it for Indian customers.

A worked cost example

Take a hypothetical brand with 5,000 subscribers sending eight campaigns a month plus flows, about 45,000 emails in total.

  • Shopify Email: 45,000 minus 10,000 free leaves 35,000 billable emails, about $35 a month. Abandoned checkout emails do not count, according to Shopify.
  • Omnisend Standard: send credits of 12 times contacts would cover 60,000 emails. The price depends on your contact tier, starting from $16 a month.
  • Klaviyo: priced on your active profile count, which includes non-subscribed customers who can be emailed. Get a quote from Klaviyo's estimator using your real profile count.

At this size Shopify Email is usually cheapest. The question is whether the cheaper tool leaves revenue on the table.

Automation and segmentation

Shopify Email

Shopify's marketing automations cover the essentials: welcome, abandoned checkout, abandoned cart, browse abandonment and post-purchase templates, built on Shopify customer segments. Segmentation uses Shopify's own segment editor, which is decent for purchase-based filters. Branching logic, A/B testing inside flows and advanced reporting are limited compared with the other two.

Omnisend

Omnisend has pre-built ecommerce workflows, split paths, product recommendations and a clean visual builder. For many stores between early traction and serious scale, it covers everything needed without much training.

Klaviyo

Klaviyo's strength is data. You can segment on any event or property, branch flows on almost anything, and qualifying accounts get predictive analytics such as expected next order date and predicted lifetime value. Klaviyo says these need at least 500 customers with orders, 180 days of order history and recent orders. RFM reporting and advanced analytics sit in paid add-ons. For brands running many SKUs, multiple customer types or a subscription model, this depth pays off.

The India question: SMS and WhatsApp

This is where Indian brands need to look beyond the feature grids.

  • Klaviyo: its SMS product does not currently send to India. It does offer a native WhatsApp channel, billed per message by type and country, so email and WhatsApp can live in one flow builder.
  • Omnisend: its channels page lists email, SMS, web push and ad-audience syncing. WhatsApp is available through third-party integrations rather than as a native channel. SMS is priced separately, and Omnisend's help centre says Standard plans started after 4 May 2026 cannot add SMS.
  • Shopify Email: email-first. For WhatsApp you will add an app or provider.

In practice, many Indian brands pair their email platform with a dedicated WhatsApp provider for COD confirmation and delivery updates, and use the email platform for campaigns and lifecycle flows.

Reporting and attribution

Each platform attributes revenue differently, which makes side-by-side comparisons tricky. Shopify Email reports sit inside Shopify's own analytics, so the numbers line up closely with your orders. Klaviyo and Omnisend attribute orders to emails using their own conversion windows, which you can adjust in settings. That is useful, but it means email-attributed revenue will not match Shopify's marketing reports exactly.

What matters is consistency. Pick one set of metrics, such as revenue per recipient, placed order rate and flow revenue as a share of total store revenue, and track them the same way every month. If you switch platforms, run both reports side by side for a month so you have a fair baseline. Our guide to why Shopify tracking numbers disagree goes deeper on this.

What switching platforms actually involves

Many brands start on Shopify Email and move later. The move is less painful than it sounds if you plan it:

  1. Sync data first. Install the new platform's Shopify app and let customers, orders and consent status sync. Check that marketing consent carried over correctly before sending anything.
  2. Rebuild flows before you switch off the old ones. Build and test welcome, abandoned checkout and post-purchase in the new tool, then turn off the old versions on the same day to avoid double sends.
  3. Set up authentication. Add the new platform's sending domain records and confirm SPF, DKIM and DMARC pass.
  4. Warm up gradually. Send your first campaigns only to recently engaged subscribers, then widen the audience over two to three weeks.
  5. Move signup forms last. Replace forms once flows are ready, so new subscribers always land in a working welcome series.

Avoid migrating in the six weeks before Diwali or Black Friday. A new setup needs time to build sending reputation, and peak season is the worst time to discover a broken flow.

Which to choose, by stage

  1. Pre-launch to early traction: Shopify Email. Build a welcome and abandoned checkout flow, grow the list and keep costs near zero.
  2. Growing, with a small team: Omnisend or Klaviyo. Choose Omnisend if budget predictability matters most, Klaviyo if you plan to scale retention seriously within a year.
  3. Scaling, with retention as a key lever: Klaviyo. The segmentation, testing and analytics justify the higher cost once email drives a meaningful share of revenue.

Whatever you choose, the tool matters less than the flows you build. Our guide to getting started with Klaviyo shows what a well-structured account looks like.

Choosing and setting up the right platform

If you are unsure whether to stay, switch or migrate, it helps to model costs on your real profile counts and send volumes before deciding. The Night Marketer sets up and runs email programmes on all three platforms, with most of our Klaviyo work described on our Klaviyo page. Frequently asked questions

For a new store, often yes. You get 10,000 free emails a month, native Shopify data and simple automations, including free abandoned checkout emails. The limits show up later: segmentation, flow logic, testing and reporting are much shallower than Klaviyo's. Plan to revisit the choice once email becomes a real revenue channel.

Klaviyo prices by active profiles, meaning anyone who can be emailed, and includes deep segmentation, flow branching, predictive analytics for qualifying accounts and a large integration ecosystem. You pay for data depth. Keep costs in check by suppressing unengaged profiles, since suppressed profiles stop counting towards your billable total once processed.

Omnisend's channels page lists email, SMS, web push and ad-audience syncing, not a native WhatsApp channel. WhatsApp can be connected through third-party integrations in Omnisend's app market. Klaviyo does have a native WhatsApp channel billed per message. Check each vendor's current documentation, as channel support changes.

It is manageable. Klaviyo's Shopify integration syncs customers, orders and consent status, so most of the data moves automatically. The real work is rebuilding flows, templates and signup forms, and warming up sending on a new domain setup. Plan two to four weeks, and avoid migrating right before a major sale.

You can, but it causes problems: split consent records, duplicate sends and confusing attribution. A common exception is using Shopify's built-in notifications for order confirmations and shipping while a marketing platform handles campaigns and flows. Otherwise, pick one platform for marketing email and keep your data in one place.
